Position: American Sign Language Interpreter
Reports to: Assistant Director of Student Programs
Supervises: None
Qualifications:
- Satisfy the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter for the Deaf Act requirements by:
- Demonstrating the interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaboratively with staff and students within the instructional setting,
- Have a comprehensive general knowledge of academic subjects and current events, educational processes and organization, principles and practices of special education, and aspects and issues of deaf culture, AND
- Meet one or more of the following:
- Completed an interpreter training program, OR
- Obtained a Bachelor's degree, OR
- Worked three (3) or more years in an area related to the field of deaf education, which could include interpreting in non-educational settings such as a church, etc., AND
- Attained at least one of the following:
- Certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
- National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level IV Certification or better.
- Oklahoma Quality Assurance Screening Test (QAST) Level III or better.
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 3.5 or better in the area for which they are certified (elementary or secondary).
- Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (ESSE) Level 3.5 or better.
- Maintain current eligibility and registration on the Oklahoma Educational Interpreter Registry.
- Satisfy all district requirements with regard to physical health and citizenship.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
Position Goal: Provide effective and qualified interpretation services between students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and others in the educational environment in order to assist in the provision of equitable communication access in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Interpret all interactions, activities, materials, and assessments, abiding by state/federal guidelines, the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct, and the NAIE Educational Interpreter Code of Ethics.
- Collaborate and participate in development and implementation of the assigned student’s IEP or 504 as a related service provider in accordance with state/federal guidelines.
- Match the language and communication needs of the student(s) and situation.
- Collaborate with teachers and staff regarding accessibility of school curriculum, activities, and environment.
- Maintain interpreter observations and applicable student records.
- Prepare for interpreting by reviewing course materials and doing research as needed.
- Participate in ongoing training as is applicable.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Employment Terms: Nine (9) months classified hourly contract
